October Strings Report

Term 4 has begun in earnest. With HSC Music Extension exams over and our Year 12 cohort looking ahead to 2018 it is exciting to hear that a couple of NECOM students are preparing to audition for the Sydney Conservatorium in December. We wish them well in their musical endeavours.

NECOM staff were delighted to be involved in The Armidale School's Paul Jarman Concerts which took place on Friday and Saturday of the first week back. The string teachers were invited to play the accompaniment to the many choral works that the TAS choirs performed under the direction of the internationally acclaimed composer, Paul Jarman.

NECOM's adult string ensemble, Con Brio, proudly performed to a most appreciative audience in week two. Their next performance will be a Xmas carol program as part of the Armidale Xmas in the Mall event on Thursday 23 November.

Video link lessons with Tor Fromhyr, Senior Lecturer in violin /viola at ANU School of Music, Canberra have begun with a very productive session for Jessica Hughes and her teacher Joanna Fairs-Wu. This is such an exciting project to be involved with and at the same time provides a pathway for our students if they should choose to pursue tertiary studies at ANU.

Scales Parties are happening again! Our committed string teachers are offering 45-minute group sessions for designated AMEB exam levels on Friday 3  Saturday 4 November. All students involved will be notified by their respective teacher as to the class times. These sessions are a fun and invaluable way to help instil confidence and offer great hints for thorough preparation of scales for AMEB exams. Each session will conclude with party food.

NECOM Studio Concerts are scheduled during this term along with the Foundation Ensembles concert and the Chamber Ensemble Program concert Please come along and support our young and talented developing players as they perform as soloists and in ensembles.

Many of the Armidale music community will remember the New England Sinfonia from previous years. This ensemble is about to make a revival under the direction on Stephen Wu. The chamber orchestra will comprise of  NECOM teachers, friends and our top students. The performance is on Sunday 10 December, 3pm at NERAM. The program will include Elgar's sublime String Serenade, Britten's Simple Symphony and  Boccherini Cello  Concerto in B flat with a brilliant young cellist from Brisbane, David Freisberg.
